How to rename the User folder in Windows 10? - Super User.

By default, the name of the user profile folder is the same as the username. Since the home folder contains all the windows 10 change username and home folder free folders like pictures, documents, downloads, etc. Basically, there are four major things you need to do. That is, увидеть больше a local administrator account, rename the user account, rename the user profile folder, and finally, map the renamed folder to the user account using the registry editor.

Caution: Before proceeding, create a system restore point. This helps you restore Windows if you mess up anything. Though the process of renaming the home folder is pretty simple, there are quite a few steps. While you are logged into your user account, you cannot rename your own user profile folder.

This is true even if you are the administrator. As such, we need to windows 10 change username and home folder free another local administrator account.

Once created, we will use that account to make all the necessary changes. Of course, you can enable hidden administrator account too but the below method is recommended. Note: If you already have another local user account with administrator privileges then you can skip this section. The user account name and the home folder should have the same name. So, if you want to rename the home folder, you need to change the user account name too. Since everything worked great, the downloaded file is saved in the Downloads folder of the renamed home folder.

Once everything is working fine, you can delete Windows user account you created earlier. If you like this article, do check how to get full user account details in Windows and how to login automatically in Windows Scroll to Top.

How to Change User Folder Name in Windows 10 – 2 Ways. How to change User Folder Name in Windows 10 Home - Microsoft Community

Setting up the new laptop with Windows 10 has created a User account folder name I don't want i. I don't want this name, hence I want to change that User account name to reflect what I had on my Windows 7 system i. Being that I had just set up the laptop I decided to just restart from scratch again. This time when setting up I did not sign into a Microsoft account for it then to dictate naming I then named the user account to what I wanted PS - Just out of curiosity; is it best to have the same Username folder name you used in Windows 7 for Windows 10 so as everything links up properly within for example Documents folder Was this reply helpful?

Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. We are glad that your issue is resolved. Thank you for sharing the information with us. It might help someone in the future. If you need any further assistance regarding Windows Operating Systems, please feel free to contact us again. We will be happy to assist you accordingly. I had exactly the same problem following the recommended fix, and had to use System Restore to get back in again, which of course got me right back to where I was before.

I now have an old PC which is failing and a new one that I cannot use, because of what Windows 10 chose to do without giving me the option. I ran into the same issue as the OP, but when I did the things you mentioned to alter my username post-install, it completely broke some basic filestructure access on my PC. Whenever I tried to access the "This PC" view, it would act like the window was indexing, but it would never finish and render the view.

I am unable to fix this currently. When I get home from work, I am going to do what the OP did and not sign in to my Microsoft Account during setup to fix this problem.

I had to use System Restore as well. So I resolved it by going old school: I created a new user without using my Microsoft Account, with the username that I wanted.

I gave it Administrative rights. I then went into that new account and deleted the problem user account which was tied to my Microsoft Account. Now, even though I have a user that is not tied into my Microsoft Account, at least it is named the way that I want, and some of my programs and applications now display the pathname with an appropriate username in the way that I want.

So this problem stems from the fact that, for some inexplicable reason, Windows 10 is set to automatically grab some portion of the email address used for your Microsoft Account in my case it was the first 5 characters of my email address and then locks that name in across the system, unable to be changed.

Since I'm not a fan of cloud computing, I'm OK with not using my Microsoft Account - and if Microsoft really wants its users to default to that mode, then theyre going to have to figure out a way to allow the file structure naming to be easily user modified.

Having to muck around in the registry to change a username in the Year is just absurd. Having inherited my wife's old laptop which has Windows 10 I set out to change the User name. I followed through as instructed -including the Registry hack and rename - and everything seemed to work; and still does. However I noted although my new User name folder was now showing and operative, there was also a legacy of the old User name containing just an App Data folder. It was telling that although App Data is hidden by default, the old folder did not respond to hide.

Unlike under the new User name where App Data files are hidden and can be made to show. I conclude the Old user name folder is -to all intent and purpose - redundant but it will not permit me to delete or even rename telling me the files are in use in another folder and should be closed before trying again. I have been unable to do this in Normal or Safe mode. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

I came from a Windows 7 system. Naturally I tried something simple by seeing if there was a rename option but there isn't. Can someone please help me with info to change this User account name? In reply to Matt S. T's post on December 20, Hi Matt, We are glad that your issue is resolved. Thank you. This fix did not work in Windows While the steps appeared as noted above for Method 2, the HKEY registry edit portion of the fix results in a temporary profile being created after final reboot.

Please advise. In reply to rocinante1's post on January 13, Is this a known problem when changing usernames? I do not like MS arbitrarily assigning a user folder name to a name I do not want or like.

Hopefully MS will issue an OS update to allow the administrator to change the folder name to something desired. I don't advise method two, it messes up the system. Likely because the profile path is changed but I'm guessing all the local user settings remain in the old user path.

Bitchesse Shaileh Lexa Carver. Perhaps with the changes made, as Windows 10 and 10 Pro evolve, this above mentioned procedure needs to be re-vamped or modified as the ending results would terrify a novice user This site in other languages x.
